Events for 2008-2009

The Colorado Chapter of the Fulbright Association invites its members, their families, and friends to join in hosting this year’s visiting Fulbright scholars and students.

Attendance by visiting Fulbrighters at all events is complimentary. All others are subject to the applicable costs described below.

Alumni are encouraged to volunteer to provide transportation for visiting Fulbrighters when they RSVP.

RSVP required for ALL events by the date listed.

Please note that several have a long lead time!

SEPTEMBER

Tour and Picnic at Denver Zoo

Denver Zoo is home to nearly 4,000 animals representing over 700 species and is one of the most popular zoos in the United States. We are working on getting a little tour set up and hopefully, we can arrange something behind the scenes to get a little closer to the animals. Around noon, we’ll picnic together and following that, you can continue at the zoo or head home. http://www.denverzoo.org

Directions: Let’s meet at the front gates at 10:30!

From the North:
Take I-25 south to I-70 (exit #214) then take I-70 East to Colorado Boulevard south (Exit #276-B). Go south on Colorado Boulevard for 2 miles to 23rd Avenue and turn right (west). The main entrance is on 23rd Ave. about 1/2 mile down on the left (south).

From the South:
Take I-25 North to Colorado Boulevard (exit #204). Go north on Colorado Boulevard for 5 miles to 23rd Avenue and turn left (west). The main entrance is on 23rd Avenue about 1/2 mile down on the left (south).

From the East:
Take I-70 West to Colorado Boulevard south (Exit #276-B). Go south on Colorado Boulevard for 2 miles to 23rd avenue and turn right (west). The main entrance is on 23rd Avenue about 1/2 mile down on the left (south).

From the West:
Take I-70 East to Colorado Boulevard south (Exit #276-B). Go south on Colorado Boulevard for 2 miles to 23rd Avenue and turn right (west). The main entrance is on 23rd Avenue about 1/2 mile down on the left (south).

Special Instructions for ALL: Please bring your own lunch or be prepared to buy something from one of the many concessions. Picnic lunches with coolers are fine to bring into the zoo, however, the zoo asks that you do not bring glass containers or alcohol. Additionally, the zoo opens at 9:00 if you would like to peruse the flora and fauna before we meet up at 10:30.

 

OCTOBER

Jewel of the Rockies: The United States Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs

Join us for this special tour of the major areas around the US Air Force Academy including the Academy Chapel, Arnold Hall and the Academy’s Visitor Center conducted by Fulbright alumni David Sacko and Fran Pilch.

Directions: We will meet just outside of the north entrance of the Academy. Take I-25 to exit 156b (14 miles north of downtown Colorado Springs), as you approach the gate you will see a parking area to the right. We will meet there and then caravan to four stops: the B-52 exhibit, the athletic field overlook, Arnold Hall and the visitor’s center. Maps will be provided.

Special Instructions: The B-52, Athletic Field Overlook and the Visitor’s Center will involve a minimal amount of walking. The walk around Arnold Hall, however, will involve touring the Chapel and traversing the exterior of the north edge of the cadet area. While this latter area is handicap-accessible, we will be covering about a half-mile distance.

JANUARY

Annual Meeting and Tour of the Colorado History Museum, Denver

After a short business meeting with a report on the past year’s activities and an election of the board of directors, we’ll learn about one of our greatest treasures—public land in Colorado—from Jill Ozerski, the Executive Director for the Colorado Coalition of Land Trusts. Then we’ll take a tour of Colorado’s colorful history by visiting exhibits focusing on the Native Americans who first lived here, the cowboy’s arrival, and the mining industry to name just a few.

Open daily from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm. Unattended lots and metered parking spaces are within walking distance. Little Shop of Physics Tour and Lunch, Ft. Collins

Each year, the Little Shop of Physics, Colorado State University's hands-on science outreach program, shares its collection of over 200 experiments with more than 15,000 students at all grade levels, K-16, throughout the region. Through having fun with exciting hands-on experiments, students learn science and learn that science is a rewarding activity they can do. Directions: As at all universities, parking is limited at CSU. Specific directions to CSU and for parking will be sent out on the listserv prior to the event.

Special Instructions for Attendees: The Little Shop is fun and a learning experience for "children" of all ages. In association with the Little Shop visit, we will dine together at a good inexpensive family friendly restaurant near the CSU campus; probably Sri Thai.

Join us to cheer on the home team as the Rockies play their opponent in one of the most beautiful baseball stadiums in the country! Seating more than 50,000, Coors field features panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains and a high altitude challenge for the players. With hotdogs, peanuts, and music for the fans, this is truly an all American experience not to be missed!
